Training, coaching and mentoring are all systematic elements that support ongoing employee development.
Coaching in an employer/employee environment is about helping the person achieve peak performance in their job, as described by the job description. Coaching is not a performance evaluation, and it is not a disciplinary action.
Identify an existing employee in your organization and use that employee as the example throughout the following questions.
What are your company's key expectations for this employee? Be specific and quantitative.
Estimate this employee's current performance in those same key areas.
What suggestions would you make to help the employee close the gap between expectations, or potential, and current performance?
Compare current performance to performance expectations.
The employee reports up to the manager.
Define the gap, or the gaps.
Be specific by behavior or activity, and keep it quantitative.
Identify the challenges and obstacles.
Provide solutions, coach on skill sets, and identify the training needed.
Develop an action plan.
Detailed, quantitative and measurable, and oriented to a goal.
Establish the next meeting.
Set the date before this session ends, so the coaching cadence holds.
List what you will do to improve your employee coaching performance in the coming weeks and months.
Develop and implement an initiative to create and implement an effective coaching strategy that helps your employees achieve peak performance.
